I often notice when October arrives and the weather gets colder and the days shorter I have a tendency to feel a bit sad. But I love summer, I love being outdoors and I love the warmth. So in a small way I feel that loss. But not only is autumn a time for change in the natural world but in many people’s lives it is a time of transition. Some parents see their children go off to school for the first time or onto the big wide world of secondary school. For others their children fly the nest and go off to university, leaving some parents, women in particular, feeling bereft. And it’s women I am speaking to because it is you who are likely to have invested more of your time into your children’s upbringing and you who are likely to feel that loss more acutely. This may be even harder if you are living with the legacy of postnatal depression or you’ve had breast cancer or been through a divorce.
So what is it you need right now? It may be a listening ear, just someone to listen to how you feel, not advice or reassurance, just listening. Being listened to and really heard can leave head space to see this time as not just a time of loss but also a time of opportunity when you can take charge of your life and maybe carve out a new career or at least take up something, that something that you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time. And if you are in a relationship the relationship has a chance to blossom.
So what can you do? According to a short video I watched on line “To get what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done”. This might be something quite small like going out, feeling, smelling and noticing the changes in the natural world. That will take you right into the present and when you do that you can leave all the worries about the future and regrets about the past behind and just enjoy the present. And who knows what might open up for you? Or it may be something else, something more challenging.
